Mr Di Franco is a general surgeon with a specialty interest in benign upper gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopic (key hole surgery). Laparoscopic surgery represents the vast majority of his elective work. In contrast to the traditional open surgery, by means of small incisions (0.5 – 1 cm long), laparoscopic surgery allows to perform operations avoiding large incisions. This minimally invasive technique is associated with significant benefits in terms of reduced postoperative pain, and quicker recovery.
He offers treatment for patients with with gallstones. He performs about 100-120 laparoscopic cholecystectomies (removal of the gallbladder) per year with a very low conversion rate. He has also an interest in the management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Mr Di Franco is a JAG (Joint Advisory Group on Endoscopy) accredited upper gastrointestinal endoscopist. He routinely performs both diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy. He has a large experience in laparoscopic repair of groin hernias (inguinal and femoral hernia) and all the abdominal wall hernias including incisional, umbilical, epigastric hernias. He also offers surgery for “lumps and bumps”.
He underwent both his basic and higher surgical training in the North East of England. He trained in upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery at the Northern Oesophago Gastric Unit that is one of the largest Oesophago-Gastric Units in the UK. Here, he also undertook his research under the supervision of Professor SM Griffin. His thesis on perioperative immunonutrition in patients undergoing surgery for oesophag-gastric cancer was awarded an MD.
Mr Di Franco is an educational supervisor and regularly teaches in courses for medical students and surgical trainees.
Mr Di Franco has an ongoing interest in clinical research. He publishes in peer-review journals and has presented in national and international conferences.
He also wrote chapters for the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery and Oxford Handbook of Operative Surgery.
Mr Filippo Di Franco was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in 2011. Here he joined the well established upper gastrointestinal unit.
